The heaviest camera bag I ever carried was on my first safari: two bodies, five lenses, a drone, a tripod with a head built for stadiums. I used perhaps a tenth of it, missed shots while swapping glass, and spent the year after rethinking everything. The kit I carry now weighs 3.2 kilograms complete — and it has never once been the reason I missed a photograph.

The philosophy is simple: the golden hour lasts twenty minutes, and gear friction is measured in shots, not grams. One weather-sealed body. One 24–105mm that never comes off. One fast thirty-five for low light and food. That's the core — everything else is strategy.

Strategy means: a circular polarizer for water and sky (the single highest-impact filter you can own), a travel tripod that fits inside a daypack rather than strapped outside advertising itself, and three batteries rotated with religious discipline. Cold kills lithium; an inside pocket against your body is worth more than any battery grip.

Leave behind: the drone unless you've cleared permits (in half our destinations they're banned outright), the 70–200 unless wildlife is the explicit purpose, and any lens you 'might' need. Might-need comes home unshot.

The best photograph of your trip will happen when you're present, not rummaging. Pack for presence, and the golden hour will take care of itself.
