Iceland sits on the mid-Atlantic ridge, where two tectonic plates tear slowly apart — which is why the island feels unfinished. Waterfalls pour off every fjord, glaciers calve into lagoons of blue ice, and steam rises from valleys where you can bathe in rivers warm as a bath.

In winter the island turns theatrical. The sun barely clears the horizon, painting four-hour golden hours across the snow — and after dark, when the solar wind cooperates, the aurora begins: green curtains folding and pulsing over glaciers and turf-roofed cabins.
