How We Plan a Safari: From First Call to First Elephant

Every safari we design starts with the same question, and it's not 'when do you want to go?' It's 'what do you want to feel?' River-crossing chaos and calving-season tenderness are four months and four hundred kilometres apart — answering the feeling question first is what separates a great safari from an expensive one.

The migration is not a spectacle pinned to a calendar; it's a slow weather system. Wildebeest follow rain, rain follows no schedule, and so the first document we open is not a brochure but fifteen years of herd-movement data. Calving on the southern plains from late January through March — when eight thousand calves drop daily and predators converge. Western corridor crossings in June. The Mara river gauntlets from July to October.

Camp positioning is where planning becomes craft. We favor mobile camps that relocate with the herds — a fixed lodge in the wrong month is a beautiful room overlooking empty grass. Ninety minutes between you and the action is ninety minutes too far; our rule is that you should hear hyenas from your tent's verandah, not from a vehicle after a long transfer.

Then the hardware: private vehicle or shared (we will gently argue for private), guide seniority (ask how many seasons, not years), vehicle seating (six seats, four guests — the middle seats stay empty), and the honest conversation about mornings. Dawn drives are cold, jarring, and non-negotiable. The animals' day begins before yours, and that asymmetry is the entire point.

A safari rehearsed this carefully rarely surprises us. It does, without exception, surprise you — the first elephant materializing out of dust light tends to undo people. That's the part we can't plan. That's the part we plan everything around.
